During the weekend we received our first grapes for 2016. Chardonnay is always the first grape to harvest. Fikardos winery uses it to produce two wines, a fresh, unoaked chardonnay called Alkisti and the lightly oaked chardonnay Xilogefiro.
Chardonnay is by far the most planted and most popular white wine grape variety in the world. The variety originates from France and is a cross between Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Gouais Blanc. The cultivation of Chardonnay started in Cyprus during the early 80s and it is been used by Fikardos winery for the last 20 years.
This year’s Chardonnay grapes did not have any problem. The hot weather and the lag of rain have produced smaller grapes but with concentrated flavors. We are eager to see how this year’s Chardonnay will develop.
Next grape to harvest will be the beautiful Semillon.
We wish to all wineries a great harvest !!!
